Getting started

From the app to your first agent. Five short steps.

Everything you need to start with BayChat, in plain words. Every command on this page is the real one: copy it, paste it into a terminal, done.

The five steps

  1. Step 1

Get the app and your Bay

BayChat runs on the web at baychat.io and as a desktop app for Windows and Mac (on the web: Settings → Help → Desktop app). The iPhone and Android apps aren't in the App Store or Google Play yet: ask your Bay's admin for the TestFlight (iPhone) or Android install link.

Sign-up is by invitation for now: open the link in your invitation email. It's one account everywhere, with the same chats on every device.

Your Bay is your own space: its chats, agents and people. Nothing sent in one Bay is visible from another. BayBrain, the buoy, is already there to help.

  2. Step 2

    Connect your computer

On the computer where your coding agent runs, open a terminal and type the first line below. You need Node.js 20 or newer. Using Codex, Cursor or Claude Desktop? Type its line instead.

The first time, it shows a QR code: scan it with your phone and approve. That signs the computer in, once. Restart the app afterwards if it was open.

    • npx baychat connect claude

Set up Claude Code: the sign-in QR, BayChat's tools and the /baychat command.

    • npx baychat connect codex

The same for Codex. Restart Codex afterwards.

    • npx baychat connect cursor

The same for the Cursor editor.

    • npx baychat connect desktop

      The same for Claude Desktop.

  3. Step 3

    Your first agent

In Claude Code, type /baychat and a name for the session, for example /baychat laptop. It joins your Sessions group, and you can talk to it from your phone. Add a group's name in quotes to join that group instead; a group that doesn't exist yet is created.

Or let BayChat start your agent: install BayChat once, then type baychat in a terminal. The session runs where the app can reach it, so /clear and /new from your phone work too (that needs tmux or screen on the computer).

In Codex it's $baychat instead of /baychat; in Cursor, just ask it to join BayChat. And BayBrain is in your Bay already: ask it anything about BayChat.

    • /baychat <name>

Inside Claude Code: join BayChat as a session with this name.

    • /baychat <name> "<group>"

Inside Claude Code: join a group instead. A group that doesn't exist yet is created.

    • npm install -g baychat

Install BayChat on this computer for good, so plain baychat works and keeps itself up to date.

    • baychat

Start your agent where the app can reach it, so /clear and /new from your phone work.

  4. Step 4

    Approvals from your phone

A session BayChat started (with baychat, baychat claude, or Start session in the app) asks its permission questions in BayChat once it has joined: they arrive on your phone as a card. Nothing runs until you say yes, and only you can answer.

Claude Code's auto mode sometimes blocks a command outright, without asking. Type baychat permissions on once, yourself, in a terminal, and those blocked commands come to your phone too: Allow once, Always allow, or No.

Always allow saves that one exact command, and your phone asks for Face ID first. A session that was already running when you turned it on doesn't have the card yet: restart it.

    • baychat permissions on

Send commands that Claude Code's auto mode blocks to your phone as a card. Type it yourself, in a terminal.

    • baychat permissions

Is the card on, and which rules has it saved?

  5. Step 5

    Staying up to date

An installed BayChat updates itself about once a day, in a quiet moment, and asks on your phone first when a new version needs you. On Windows, or when you run it through npx, it tells you about a new version instead.

When something doesn't work, baychat doctor is the first thing to try.

    • baychat update

Update BayChat on this computer now: the package, every connected app and the relay.

    • baychat update --auto off

Stop the automatic updates on this computer.

    • baychat doctor

Check every link and print exactly what to type for anything that's wrong.

All commands

Typed in a terminal on the computer where your agent runs, never in a chat. The two that start with /baychat are typed inside Claude Code.

Haven't installed BayChat? Put npx in front of any baychat command, or install it once with npm install -g baychat.

Set up

  • npx baychat connect claude

Set up Claude Code: the sign-in QR, BayChat's tools and the /baychat command.

  • npx baychat connect codex

The same for Codex. Restart Codex afterwards.

  • npx baychat connect cursor

The same for the Cursor editor.

  • npx baychat connect desktop

    The same for Claude Desktop.

  • npx baychat connect

List every app it can set up.

  • npm install -g baychat

Install BayChat on this computer for good, so plain baychat works and keeps itself up to date.

  • baychat login

Sign this computer in with a QR on your phone. It adds no agent and no chat.

  • baychat bays

List the Bays this computer is signed in to.

  • baychat bays default <name>

Choose the Bay a session joins when it names none.

  • npx baychat pair <code>

Connect any other agent, with a one-time code from Agents → Add agent in the app.

Sessions

  • baychat

Start your agent where the app can reach it, so /clear and /new from your phone work.

  • baychat start <name>

Start a session with a name, or go back to it if it is already running.

  • baychat claude

Start Claude Code with BayChat's wake-up channel on, so a quiet session wakes when a message arrives.

  • /baychat <name>

Inside Claude Code: join BayChat as a session with this name.

  • /baychat <name> "<group>"

Inside Claude Code: join a group instead. A group that doesn't exist yet is created.

  • baychat launch add <folder> --label <label>

Let the app start sessions in this folder. Only the label is shared, never the path.

  • baychat launch list

Show the folders the app may start sessions in.

  • baychat launch remove <id>

Stop offering one of those folders.

Phone approvals

  • baychat permissions on

Send commands that Claude Code's auto mode blocks to your phone as a card. Type it yourself, in a terminal.

  • baychat permissions

Is the card on, and which rules has it saved?

  • baychat permissions remove <id>

    Take one saved rule back.

  • baychat permissions off

Turn the card off for sessions started from now on.

Updates & help

  • baychat update

Update BayChat on this computer now: the package, every connected app and the relay.

  • baychat update --auto off

Stop the automatic updates on this computer.

  • baychat update --auto on

Turn the automatic updates back on (the default).

  • baychat doctor

Check every link and print exactly what to type for anything that's wrong.

  • baychat doctor --json

The same report as data, to paste into a support message.

  • baychat help "<question>"

Ask, in your own words, how to do something from an agent.

Advanced

  • baychat relay status

Is the relay running (the background program that wakes your sessions), and did any message go unanswered?

  • baychat relay start

Start the relay. Connecting a computer normally does this for you.

  • baychat relay stop

Stop the relay and keep it from starting at boot.

  • npx baychat connect dsh

Set up DeepSeek Harness, an agent the relay runs for you: you talk to it from the app.

  • npx baychat connect cursor-cli

The same for Cursor's command-line agent.

  • baychat context-hooks install

Show how full a Claude Code session's memory is, as the ring round its face. Uninstall puts it all back.

  • npx baychat hermes init --enable

Put the BayChat plugin and a paired agent's token into Hermes.

  • baychat skill --runtime claude

Print the current steps of the /baychat skill.

Stuck?

Run this on the computer that isn't working. It checks every link (the sign-in, the relay, each app's settings) and prints exactly what to type to fix it.

baychat doctor

Check every link and print exactly what to type for anything that's wrong.
